A Labor Day Tennis Event Aims to Knock Out Cancer
Fashion and philanthropy collided at the 14th Annual Costa Mesa Wood Racquet Classic on Sept. 1 – 2, where tennis enthusiasts took to the court in an effort to fundraise for the John Wayne Cancer Foundation. The event served up more than $10,000 toward cancer research—truly giving the classic a home court advantage over the battle to end cancer. The event started with preliminary tennis matches at the Palisades Tennis Club in Newport Beach and concluded with the official tournament day at the Wood Racquet Classic Estates in Costa Mesa. At the estates, the homes of co-founders Johnny McCray and Clayton Peterson combined backyards to boast a full-sized tennis court. Vintage tennis wear and classic wood racquets were abound. Tournament day activities also included a silent auction of items from jewelry to surfboards, a photo booth, catering by Fork, Knife + Spoon, and ice cream delivery by Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour. —A.
